We wash our hands without saying a blessing. This is a preparatory washing, a purification before we partake of the Karpas. In the Temple, the priests washed before handling sacred offerings. Tonight, every person at this table is a priest, and this table is an altar.

Yachatz — Breaking
🫓 Take the middle matzah and break it into two pieces. The larger piece becomes the Afikoman — hide it for the children to find later.
The broken matzah is the bread of poverty — just as the poor person breaks off a piece and saves the rest for tomorrow, so we break the matzah. We begin with brokenness, because the story of liberation begins in a place of incompleteness.
The Afikoman — the hidden piece — will be our dessert, the last taste of the evening. Freedom is something we must search for, and sometimes it is the children who find it first.

We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the Lord our God brought us out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Had the Holy One, Blessed be He, not taken our ancestors out of Egypt, then we, our children, and our children's children would still be enslaved to Pharaoh in Egypt.
Even if all of us were wise, all understanding, all elders, all knowledgeable in Torah — we would still be obligated to tell the story of the Exodus from Egypt. And whoever expands upon the story deserves praise.

The bitter herb reminds us of the bitterness of slavery in Egypt. The charoset — sweet and brown — represents the mortar with which our ancestors labored. We dip bitterness into sweetness, because even in the hardest labor there was hope.

In remembrance of the Temple, following Hillel. This is what Hillel did when the Temple still stood: he would combine the Passover offering, matzah and bitter herbs and eat them together, to fulfill what is written: "With matzot and bitter herbs they shall eat it."
Hillel's sandwich holds a profound truth: freedom and suffering, sweetness and bitterness, are not separate — they are consumed together, experienced together, understood together.

We eat the Afikoman. This is the last matzah we will eat tonight — so that the taste of matzah, the taste of freedom, lingers on our lips. Nothing should erase this taste.
The word "Afikoman" may come from the Greek epikomion — "that which comes after," or perhaps "dessert." It is the hidden piece, sought after and found, the sweet conclusion of the evening's story.
